Lobster Supply Chain Internship

At approximately 9:24 a.m. on Friday, April 19, a University of Maine graduate student was struck by a university vehicle on Long Road at the University of Maine campus in Orono. The student reports that they are at a local hospital with minor injuries.

Emergency services, including the Orono Fire Department, University Volunteer Ambulance Corps, University of Maine Police Department, Orono Police Department and Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

The university vehicle involved in the incident was a Chevrolet Express van. It was being operated by a university employee.

Counseling services and support are available for students, faculty or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1392 and the Dean of Students Office can be reached at 207-581-1406.

The scene has been cleared and Long Road is now accessible. An investigation is being conducted by the University of Maine Police Department with assistance from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit. The Brady lab at the University of Maine’s Darling Marine Center is searching for an intern to join our team for the 2022 summer season. Our lab has partnered with other labs at UMaine, St Joseph College, Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve, and groups within Maine’s lobster industry such as the Maine Lobster Dealers Association, Maine Lobstermen’s Association, Luke’s Lobster, Inland Seafood, and Ready Seafood to form a collaborative team tackling the issue of post-harvest mortality within Maine’s lobster industry. This research aims to understand the environmental and physiological stressors that influence mortality of lobsters in the supply chain. We are doing this by monitoring both environmental parameters and physical and biological markers of stress in the lobsters. Our intern will be heavily involved with data collection in both the field and lab.

The internship is 40 hours per week and will begin mid-May and end mid-August. Beginning and end dates are flexible. This is an exciting opportunity for emerging scientists interested in fishery science and animal health to gain experience in the field and lab while being involved in a collaborative research project.

Responsibilities include:

Management of monitoring equipment
Prepare lab and field equipment
Data management
Complete a personal research project to present at the end of the summer

Requirements:

We are looking for a hardworking individual who is very flexible with work hours, can complete tasks without supervision and in a timely manner, and can handle live lobsters. Successful applicants will be a current undergraduate in biology, marine biology or a related field. Must be comfortable entering and working within a lobster processing facility when all appropriate PPE is provided, and CDC COVID-19 guidelines are followed. A reliable vehicle and driver’s license are required.
