Procedures

  • Call 911 for local police, fire, and emergency medical services. Tell the dispatcher you are at the Darling Marine Center at 193 Clarks Cove Road in Walpole (Walpole is part of South Bristol). Give details about where you are on campus (upper or lower, which building). The dispatcher may not be familiar with the area, so be as specific as possible. There are phones located in each building and will remain operational during a power outage.
  • Know your rally point! If you are in Brooke Hall, go to the opposite side of the lower campus in the parking lot by the lab buildings. If you are in any of the lab buildings, proceed to the parking lot in front of Brooke Hall. If you are on the upper campus, proceed to the parking area by the large field in between the upper and lower campuses.
  • Have someone waiting outside ready to direct first responders to the emergency scene location.
  • Do not attempt to clean up blood or chemical spills unless you are trained.
  • Nearest hospital: LincolnHealth Miles Campus, 35 Maine Street, Damariscotta (just under 8 miles from campus)
  • Walk-in Care: LincolnHealth Watson Health Center (first floor, same campus as the hospital). Open from 7am to 6pm daily (excludes Thanksgiving and Christmas). No appointment necessary.
  • There are AED’s and first aid kits located in each building.

  • Shipping hazardous materials – International law requires training prior to shipping hazardous materials in any quantity. Even seemingly ‘safe’ substances may be considered hazardous while shipping. It is the responsibility of the person shipping the material (not the carrier) to obey all applicable laws and regulations. UMaine provides training and support for faculty, staff, and students who need to ship hazardous materials.
  • See UMS Academy Compliance Training tab below for additional details on Hazardous Communication and Hazardous Waste training.
  • See UMS Academy Compliance Training tab below for more information on required lab safety training.
  • Chemical Hygiene Plans (CHP) describe the basic practices for operating laboratories at the DMC. Each laboratory is required to have a written CHP describing lab safety procedures.
  • Chemical spills: Only trained personnel are allowed to clean up spills of hazardous chemicals. Contact your supervisor for more information on chemical spill cleanup.

Safety Training

The University of Maine requires all employees to complete online safety modules through UMS Academy. This includes faculty, staff, graduate students, postdocs, student employees, and summer interns. This training must be completed annually and within 30 days of employment.

The onboarding process for new employees provides you with a UMaine ID number, which you can then use to activate your account. Once your account is activated, you can access UMS Academy Compliance Training through Employee Self Service in MaineStreet.

Required training modules should show up automatically in UMS Academy and are part of the onboarding process. Specific labs have additional trainings you are required to complete based on allotted space and delegated tasks, and all safety trainings are overseen by the individual labs.
