Microbial Ecology/Biogeochemistry Internship

Prof. Rich is seeking an undergraduate intern for the summer to help with microbial ecology and biogeochemistry projects at the Darling Marine Center (DMC). This internship will provide hands-on experience, enhancing laboratory and field-based research skills to help advance professional and academic careers.

The summer intern will be working to support studies of microbial communities and processes in the marine environment at coastal field sites near the DMC. There are two main projects happening in the lab that students may participate in:

(1) investigating nitrogen cycling in coastal sediments

(2) assessing the effectiveness of kelp farming on carbon sequestration

The intern will work closely with a graduate student studying the diversity and role of benthic foraminifera in coastal nitrogen cycling. Tasks may include assisting with field sampling (SCUBA diving experience is a plus but not required), laboratory analyses, and contributing content to educational videos about the lab’s research.

Ideal but not required qualifications include interest in microbial communities and processes, demonstrated success in scientific courses, interest in working in the field and lab, and previous research experience.
