Undergraduate Research Internship in Estuarine Ecology: Applications will be reviewed starting February 5, 2024

The Leslie Lab at the University of Maine Darling Marine Center is seeking two undergraduate
interns to contribute to an engaged research project that integrates ecology and participatory
social science approaches to study complex estuarine ecosystems. This internship is for 10 weeks
(May 28-August 2, 2024) and will be based at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, Maine.

The interns will contribute to an ongoing study exploring the links between oyster aquaculture
and emerging wild oyster populations in the Damariscotta River estuary. Interns will learn
biological and social science field methods and have multiple opportunities to build skills in
collaboration, communication and outreach. Interns will be compensated $16/hour, and also are
eligible for on-campus housing (a position benefit equivalent to nearly $200/week). Interns are
expected to work 40 hours per week during the 10 weeks, and hours will vary to some degree
from week to week, with the tides and weather.

Requirements: This position will include physically demanding activities and outdoor fieldwork
in the marine intertidal zone. Competitive candidates must be self-motivated and demonstrate
willingness to contribute to research in estuarine ecosystems. Strong communication skills are
essential. Rising 3rd and 4th year college students are particularly encouraged to apply.
Competitive candidates will have completed biology, oceanography, other upper level science
courses, and social science courses, such as anthropology or human geography. Candidates
should be capable of working independently, as well as in a team. Access to a personal vehicle is
