Introduction to Ocean and Coastal Mapping | July 6-17 2020

This hands-on course will introduce students to basic methods and skills for using geographic information systems, satellite location technology (eg GPS) and remote sensing technology in marine and coastal applications. We will cover the fundamentals of GIS mapping and cartography, basic geoprocessing and spatial analysis, methods for collecting and mapping field data using GPS, and basic analysis of remotely sensed imagery. In addition to field and classroom work, students enrolling for credit will plan and execute a mapping project that may be related to their ongoing research (due August 3rd). Equivalent to a two credit, graduate-level course.   • Students will need to have a PC or Mac with VMWare or Parallels running a Windows OS, and the hardware must meet the minimum system requirements for ArcGIS Pro which can be accessed here: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/get-started/arcgis-pro-system-requirements.htm. This is a REQUIREMENT. The software will not install or run at all without the minimum system requirements. We will be using other software packages, but they have the same system requirements. Instructor will provide the required software and licenses for students to use. Instructor will help students install and activate the software on the first day of the course.
